While we’re in the midst of putting away bulky clothing, sharpening the mower blades and capturing some long lost vitamin D, our attention must also turn to safety. As our Michigan weather warms, treadmill users are now outside running on the pavement, college and high school track teams are putting miles on in our popular community and motorcyclists and bicyclists are sure to follow. This is a very active community and special precautions need to occur for the safety of all.
Please be mindful of the clothing worn while walking, running and cycling in the dark. Reflective garments such as vests, shoes, jackets and hats alert motorists to your presence and help prevent accidents. If reflective clothing is not used, light colored clothing is the next best option. A light must be used on bicycles during low light hours. You may NOT ride two abreast in East Grand Rapids on a bicycle. Many of our streets are too narrow to accommodate safe travel.
Motorists need to be especially careful near intersections and crosswalks. Our students do a wonderful job of negotiating traffic with the assistance of our crossing guards. Be respectful and patient while they stop traffic to allow students to cross intersections. Those who ignore, hinder or harass crossing guards will be contacted by Public Safety and issued a citation for their actions.
We ask that everyone do their part to keep East Grand Rapids one the safest cities in the country.
