Street/Sidewalk Construction and Maintenance

Street Construction and Resurfacing

The city maintains 15 miles of major streets and 32 miles of residential streets. All city streets are evaluated annually, with the assistance of technical staff and equipment from the Grand Valley Metro Council (GVMC), providing pavement condition assessment-asset management ratings each year. The City updates the capital improvement plan based on the asset management ratings for streets and utilities.

Pot Holes

Residents should call the Public Works Department at 616-940-4870 to report a pothole or other problems concerning pavement and road surfaces.

East Grand Rapids Sidewalks

East Grand Rapids takes pride in being a walkable community. Everywhere you look, folks of all ages are out and about in all types of weather, shopping, jogging, headed for school, or walking the dog. At the Public Works Department, we do our best to make sure that you have a firm footing.

Every year, we inspect a selected area for worn out or unsafe squares and we replace sidewalks as necessary. We work outside the selected area wherever the most urgent problems are found. Replacement is based on a policy of established criteria based on the size of offset joints, cracking, or uneven surfaces. It takes about 10 to 12 years to complete the entire city in this continuous process. You can help by notifying us of problems that you see. Contact the Public Works Administration Office using information on the right.
