East Grand Rapids, Michigan, August 24, 2021 – The City of East Grand Rapids will hold the 37th annual Rhoades McKee Reeds Lake Triathlon/Duathlon on Saturday, Sept. 11, welcoming anyone looking to test their strength in swimming, biking and running.
All triathlon participants will dive into the race with a 750-meter swim in Reeds Lake, followed by a 20K bike ride and 5K run. Those participating in the duathlon will substitute the 750-meter swim with an additional 5K run. Aquabike and relay races also are available.
“Over the years, the triathlon has become a favorite community event and tradition for so many athletes,” Race Director Betsy Granstra said. “We are delighted to welcome professional and amateur triathletes back to East Grand Rapids to put their skills to the test after a year away due to the pandemic.”
Registration is available at eastgr.org/triathlon through race day and the Parks & Recreation Department, 750 Lakeside Drive SE, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or during packet pickup. Registration costs increase starting Sept. 9. Race shirt sizes are not guaranteed for those who register after Aug. 15.
Packet pickup will be held at the Parks and Recreation Department 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10 and 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11.
Additionally, racers are invited to sign up for an open water swim clinic in Reeds Lake on Wednesday, August 25 at 6:30 p.m.
Body marking will be available during packet pickup. Race organizers recommend participants get marked Friday to avoid the crowd on Saturday morning.
The Parks and Recreation Department is also looking for volunteers to help manage aid stations and direct traffic as well as lifeguards to ensure racers’ safety while swimming Reeds Lake.
“Volunteering is fun, simple and a great way to get involved and give back to the community,” Granstra said.
