Residents who participate in the neighborhood luminary tradition can request sand for the lanterns by noon Wednesday, Dec. 21 by calling Public Works at 616.940.4870 or submitting an online request: https://bit.ly/3j8Sl4R.
Public Works only provides the sand, which will be dropped off at requested addresses in half-filled 32-gallon barrels. Neighborhoods coordinate and organize luminary events, which are traditionally held on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Residents are responsible for purchasing their own candles and bags. Bags must be placed in the public right-of-way (the area between the sidewalk and the street).
After Christmas, residents are asked to pick up bags, remove candle remnants, dump sand back into the barrels and throw away the bags. The week of Dec. 27, Public Works will pick up the sand barrels at the addresses they were placed.
If you have any questions, please contact your neighborhood luminary coordinator or Public Works at 616.940.4870.
